My name is Maija and I'm an artist living on Vancouver Island since 2017.
A native of Peterborough Ontario, I was born into a very creative family, drawing since I was about 2 years old, on any surface I could get my hands on! (including my mother’s bedspread with a tube of her red lipstick) I am mostly self taught, with an educational background in graphic design. In the spring of 2005, I was lucky enough to study art history in Italy which solidified my love for the arts, travel and learning new things.
My artistic process is quite intuitive. I go where my imagination takes me and try to just let the ideas flow naturally. My primary medium of choice
is drawing with pen and marker, but I also love creating mixed media pieces, and have been experimenting with paper collage, acrylic and watercolour painting in the last couple of years. I recently attended a collage class at the Vancouver Island School of Art and got to explore these concepts in more depth. I enjoy the challenge of developing a new skill or technique which hopefully enhances future work.
A constant theme running through my art, whether it be photography, illustration,
collage or paintings stem from an organic place, my love of nature and the outdoors.
(most notably trees) I love using bright colours in my pieces, which often captures the
attention and imagination of children. I would describe my style as whimsical, detailed and
playful. When I'm not creating art, you can usually find me outside, exploring all the hidden gems that
make up this beautiful West Coast I now call home!
